New Weight Restrictions on M48 Severn Bridge May Affect Racecourse Visitors
Effective from 27th May 2025, a new weight restriction will come into force on the M48 Severn Bridge, potentially affecting heavy goods vehicle (HGV) traffic heading to and from Chepstow Racecourse.
The restriction, which limits vehicles over 7.5 tonnes from using the bridge, has been introduced due to concerns over the condition of the bridge’s main cables. According to National Highways, reducing the load is essential to keeping the bridge open for most traffic while longer-term solutions are put in place.
What This Means
The restriction is expected to last 12 to 18 months, depending on further inspections and the progress of a medium-term management system currently in development. This system will include technology and traffic control measures such as signs, barriers, and signals to safely manage heavier vehicle access in the future.
Enforcement Measures
To ensure compliance, authorities will work closely with local police to enforce the new rules. The use of Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras is also being considered to monitor and restrict unauthorised vehicles.
Planning Your Journey
Chepstow Racecourse encourages all suppliers, contractors, and event attendees who rely on HGV transport to plan accordingly and explore alternative routes if necessary. Visitor experience remains a top priority, and we will continue to share updates to help minimise disruption.
