Paul Nicholls won the 1987 Welsh Grand National at Chepstow Racecourse on winner of six races PLAYSCHOOL.

Over 30 years later, he talks to us about what it was like riding in the big race and also now as a trainer, how he spots potential winners.

Q: At what point did you decide to go for the ’87 Welsh Grand National?
A: In the days after Playschool’s success at the Hennessy, it was the obvious race for him.

Q: What were you thinking during the race?
A: Don’t get there too soon! Jenny Barons kept reminding me it was a long way up the straight.

Q: Did you have any pre-race habits?
A: I didn’t eat!!

Q: Now as a trainer, what indicates that a horse has potential for the Welsh Grand National?
A: They need to stay very well …. and have a touch of class.

If you are after a day away with the family or a merry day out with friends, get yourself to the biggest raceday in Wales, The Coral Welsh Grand National.
